Worcester Beacon Race - 2010

The Malvern Hills dominate the surrounding country side. The highest point is the Worcestershire Beacon at 1394 feet. Every year since 1954 the Worcestershire Beacon race has taken place on the second Saturday of October. The route has changed slightly over the years but climb up to the Beacon hasn’t!

The race started it 3PM in Rose Bank Gardens in the town. Before the race we were warned that it was very windy on the top elsewhere on the course it was OK. The route starts by zig zaging  towards St Annes Well before following the path to Wyche Cutting. The route turned onto the main path up to the Beacon Summit. The visibility wasn’t good and by the time the summit was reached it was, as predicted, blustery, The next 5 minutes was downhill. At first it was steep then onto a path on the left hand side of North Hill. After the water station it was uphill round the North Hill. The path soon levelled out - the routed headed back towards the Beacon. Here there are great views across Worcestershire and Gloucestershire  towards the Cotswolds and the Severn Estuary - unfortunately the visibility too poor to enjoy them.

Then it was mad downhill to the finish. The path returned to St Anne’s Well. Then it was down a steep Zig Zag path to the start. It was a great race even though there was no view this year!
