British Military Fitness - Weston Park
British Military Fitness - Weston Park
I saw this event advertised in Runners World. I hadn’t heard of British Military Fitness but decided to give the event a go. It was described as ‘It's not just a run. It's a major challenge. Smoke. Water. Mud. Obstacles’. It didn’t disappoint. The venue was at Weston Park, the grounds of a stately home, just to the Northwest of Wolverhampton. The route was entirely within the park , it was all off road, some steep climbs, water above waist height , deep mud and various obstacles.
There was a mass warm up - which included pink smoke. I decided to give this a miss. I didn’t want to finish myself off before the race started! The race started at 10am. The first obstacle was a water obstacle from the Weston Park Cross Country Course (horse)! Then it was on to another horse jump before a very muddy ditch. Then after a couple of steep climbs and descents it was onto some interesting obstacles. The first was a plastic mat about 20 feet long slightly down hill.
THe mat had water sprayed over it. The idea was you you slid down head first. My number went at this point. Then it was a crawl under webbing! Then it was through woods and over some tree trunks. The obstacles came thick and fast. They included climbing over and tunnelling through various types of hay bails and a couple of horse jumps. I can’t ride a horse but if I could I wouldn’t like to go over them on horse!
Then came the best bit! As we entered the next woods we could see people ahead of us crossing a pond! When i crossed it it seemed about 2-3 feet of deep mud covered by a few inches of dirty water. To get out there was a rope to pull up on. From here it was back to the start/finish area via the woods. We we came out of the woods and to the final two obstacles. The first was a crawl under some more webbing. However, the second was “The Sting In The Tail”! We crossed the water hazard which we had traversed at the start of the race. The difference this part was about 4 feet deep. Then it was to the finish.
The race was well organised and it was friendly. It cost me £23 to enter. Which I consider value for money!
